vision statement

PSHE is an integrated part of our whole school approach to social, emotional and mental wellbeing; as a lesson in the curriculum the aim is to develop a safe place to consider key moral and ethical issues.  In the context of being a Church of England school there is an emphasis on self-esteem and regard for others, cultural diversity and equal opportunities.

PSHE aims to foster and encourage in young people a positive self-image and the confidence to know that their views and beliefs are important.  It provides the information necessary to make informed decisions and, just as importantly, about giving young people the opportunity to develop the skills to voice their decisions concerning their own behaviour and well-being in an assertive and positive way without undue influence from their peers, the media or society at large.  It is about educating students about local, national and international issues, as well as changes in technology which may affect them as individuals and so equip them for life in modern society.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

PSHE education at the Debenham High School is a planned, developmental programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives now and in the future.

As part of a whole-school approach PSHE education:

  • Develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
  • Helps to reduce or remove many of the barriers to learning experienced by pupils, significantly improving their capacity to learn and achieve.
  • Makes a significant contribution to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety and the school’s statutory responsibility to promote pupils’ well-being.
  • Is essential to safeguarding pupils, as Ofsted has set out.
  • Equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding, skills and strategies required to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives.
  • Encourages students to be enterprising and supports them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic well-being.
  • Allows students the space to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.
  • Contributes to a student’s personal development by helping them to build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.
  • Enables them to recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings.
  • Develops an understanding of themselves as individuals, along with empathy and the ability to work with others will help pupils to form and maintain good relationships, so developing the essential skills for future employability and to better enjoy and manage their lives.
