Intent - Curriculum

What students will need to know and be able to do by the end of KS3:

  • To independently develop ideas when designing, making and creating.
  • To have the power to realise intentions through developing the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding.

Developing skills – regularly re-visited and built upon in sequential learning projects (across faculty and over years)

Developing knowledge (through teacher modelling, revisiting, experiential and personal experience)

Develop Understanding through exploring, experimenting, inventing, creating, evaluating

  • To value the subjects and create lifelong love of practical subjects, design, cuisine and culture

IntroductioN

Art & Design at Debenham High School provides an art experience for all pupils. The aims and objectives are those described in Key Stage 3 Art & Design and GCSE Art & Design syllabus, but also to:

    • Make a contribution to a broad and balanced curriculum
    • Contribute to the personal and social development of the individual
    • Develop an awareness of the use of art, craft and design in other areas
    • Promote positive working relationships between teacher/pupil and pupil/pupil
    Develop self-confidence, self discipline and pride in achievement.
      Pupils are influenced by the environment in which they work. The Art & Design department aims at creating a dynamic and attractive environment that provides stimulus material and resources, easy access to materials and equipment and celebrates the success of pupils work.

Programme of study

Each subject programme of study will:

  • Provide a clear and coherent learning journey
  • Foster subject-based understanding of new knowledge, concepts and methods
  • Ensure students acquire knowledge and give opportunities for recall and application of this knowledge so that fluency is developed
  • Require students to think and reason for themselves
  • Explanations and resources enable students to engage with and master learning
  • Learning should develop a depth of understanding that brings richness to the subject but also a breadth of understanding that enriches wider life and learning
  • Develop a readiness for the next stage: be this the next lesson, the next unit of work, the next year or key stage; it prepares students for both academic, A Level, and future degree study, or vocational learning
  • Contain appropriate, regular and robust assessment methods for measuring student progress and to allow intervention where progress is not as expected.

Trips AND Visits

Contacts with outside agencies have been developed to help the pupils with their design tasks and provide support for teachers. They supplement the teachers’ expertise, extend the school’s facilities and add relevance to assignments. These links include:

  • Visits from artists, craftspeople, designers and former pupils (who have gone on to study art & design)
  • Visits to galleries both local and national …Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, National Portrait Gallery and Saatchi Gallery
  • Design Workshop days … Graffiti Day - an animator will be coming in to school to run a workshop

KEY STAGE 3

Year 7 -
Students develop key skills of drawing, colour theory and painting through 2 separate modules. The landscape module teaches students to research a range of artists in order to help them develop their own ideas for a final piece. Painting and drawing of objects and natural forms are central to the topic. The Expressionism module encourages students to explore ways of expressing emotions through visual and written studies of various artists. Students create work using a range of formal elements and mixed media techniques.

Year 8 -

Students develop their skills in craft based techniques and design areas within the 2 year 8 modules. The stories in Art module looks to a range of cultures and Art movements for inspiration for visual story telling. Students learn a range of painting and design skills in order to develop their own ideas for creating a visual narrative for a personal dream sequence. The second module explores animals in art and encourages students to look at poetry, novels and contemporary artists for inspiration. Students learn print making techniques and construction techniques in order to create their own creature.

Year 9 -

Students develop their independence in the final year of KS3 Art. They explore ideas of identity and environment through a 3d based module and a mixed media module. The 3d module uses observational drawing and cubist techniques to explore ideas and compositions. Model making and advanced painting techniques are then employed to create individual outcomes. In the second module, students create identity pieces using cameras and drawing techniques. They investigate the media and ideas of a range of contemporary artists who look at identity and self without the use of figures. Students create outcomes in a range of media inspired by the artists and their own ideas.

 

Key Stage 4

This course provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to develop their interest in Art and Design in ways that are personally relevant.  The students will explore practical, critical and contextual work through a range of 2-D and 3-D processes and media.  Students explore processes including clay work, printmaking and painting as well as photography, drawing and mixed media.

 

Content and Assessment

Unit 1:  PORTFOLIO of WORK … 60% of total marks

  • A series of modules exploring different areas of Art & Design
  • One module completed each term
  • All assessment objectives must be covered
  • The portfolio is marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.

Unit 2: Externally Set Task … 40% of the total marks

  • Question paper issued in January of Year 11
  • Choose ONE theme from the exam paper
  • Ten weeks of preparation time to produce evidence for AO 1, 2 and 3
  • 10 hours in exam conditions to produce personal response for AO 4

Both units must show evidence for all ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES

  • AO1   Develop ideas
  • AO2  Experiment with ideas
  • AO3  Record ideas
  • AO4  Produce a personal response
